Worth Eugene Mayhew, 88, of Mooresville, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 23, 1921, in Cornelius, he was the son of the late Tollie Chalmers and Lula Jane Blackwelder Mayhew.
Mr. Mayhew was retired from the Telephone Company. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Mayhew was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Cornelius.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catreana Ervin Mayhew; brother, Marvin Mayhew; and sisters, Ethel Isenhour, Ruth Furtick and Beatrice Rosser.
Mr. Mayhew is survived by his daughter, JoAnn Simmons and husband, Raymond, of Patterson; sisters, Clara White of Kannapolis, Bertha Eddings of Mooresville and Margaret Campbell of Gastonia; grandson, Robert Eugene Russell; and greatgrandson, Jarrett Russell.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home. Mr. Mayhew will lie in state from 1-2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 15, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Cornelius. The service will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Michael Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Community Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 111510 Smith Rd., Cornelius, NC 28031. Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, is serving the family of Mr. Mayhew.

Mayhew will be celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary
on Jan. 3, 2004. The honored couple was married in
York, S.C. on Jan. 3, 1942 with Catreana’s brother and sister serving as witnesses.
Worth Eugene is the son of the late Tollie C. Mayhew
and Lula Jane Blackwelder, and Catreana Inez is the
daughter of the late William Bill Ervin and Theora A.
Burke. They have one daughter, Jo Ann Simmons, a grandson,
Robert E. Russell and a great grandson, Jarrett E.
Russell, all of Patterson.
Active members of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church
in Cornelius, they attend faithfully and have served in various
positions in the church. Catreana has taught in the
Sunday School department for 32 years, and Worth has
served as the president of the Men’s Bible Class for 40
years. She is retired from Burlington Mills, and he has
retired from Alltel Telephone Company after 32 years of
service.
The Mayhews will celebrate the special occasion with
their family. They noted that all of their years have been
good ones.
