Ernest William Slayman of Columbus, Ohio, a former Portland resident, died of causes related to age Monday in a Columbus care center. Mr. Slayman was 95.
A memorial service will be held Friday in Columbus.
He was born in Pilger, Neb., on Sept. 20, 1898, and moved to the Portland area from Colorado at the age of 17. Mr. Slayman worked as an autobile mechanic for the A.B. Smith Chevrolet Co. for many years and later owned and operated an auto repair business until his retirement.
He worked at the Portland shipyards during World War II. Mr. Slayman had lived in Columbus for the past eight years. His wife, Ruth Slayman, died previously.
Survivors include his daughter, Jeanne Schlenke of Sonora, Calif.; son, Donald of Gahanna, Ohio; sisters, Ada Herinck, Emma Homolka and Mary Duddington, all of Portland, and Martha Wobermin of Gresham; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Lutheran Village of Columbus, 57 E. Main St., Columbus, Ohio 43215.
