Les G. "Pappy" Van Every, 89, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at his residence.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with Chaplain Glenn Houts of Hospice of Siouxland officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 6 p.m. today, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m., at Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel.

Les Van Every was born Dec. 31, 1912, in O'Neill, Neb., the son of James Edward and Barbara (Nitz) Van Every. He was raised in O'Neill and was employed on farms and ranches in the O'Neill and Gordon, Neb., area for several years.

He married Gretchen E. Lintt on May 6, 1939, in O'Neill. The couple lived in Gordon until moving to Sioux City in 1941. He was employed by Graham Brake Co. as a mechanic/welder for many years until retiring in 1977. He enjoyed repairing motors, gardening and splitting firewood.

Survivors include his wife, Gretchen of Sioux City; a daughter, Stella and her husband, Nolan Serviss of Sioux City; four brothers, Melvin Van Every of Niobrara, Neb., Clyde and his wife, Irene Van Every of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jim and his wife, Ella Van Every of O'Neill, and Kenneth and his wife, Mary Van Every of O'Neill; and a sister, Evelyn Derickson of O'Neill; five grandchildren, Tammy and her husband, Mike Asher, Rick and his wife, Babs Serviss, Les Serviss, Teresa and her husband, Dan Leonard and Doug Sliter; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Alice Sliter; a brother; and two sisters.
