Born in 1837 to Gilbert and Mary Ann (Wood) Drew, Martin Van Buren Drew was likely named after Martin Van Buren who became the 8th president of the United States that same year. The Drew family lived in Waterville, Maine and later in Fairfield where Martin was born. Gilbert Drew was a shoemaker.

In August of 1861, at the age of 23, Martin enlisted as a corporal in Company E, 7th Regiment, Maine Infantry. Though enlisted for three years, on December 8, 1862 he received a Certificate of Disability For Discharge from the Army of the United States. It certifies that Corporal Martin Drew was "wounded in the calf of the leg pressing downwards and injuring the tendons and causing constriction to such a degree that he cannot put his heel upon the ground." His Discharge Certificate describes him as being six feet tall, with dark complexion, black eyes and states that before enlistment his occupation was a Lumberman.

After discharge from the Army, Martin remained in Pennsylvania marrying Hannah Elizabeth Horn, daughter of Samuel W and Rebecca Horn, residents of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. Martin and Elizabeth took up residence in Bell Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. They had three sons and four daughter before Elizabeth's death on July 31, 1874.

Children of Martin and Elizabeth:
James Fetzer Drew 1865 - 1865 (six months)
Mary Emma Drew Smith 1866 - 1945
Infant Son Drew 1868 - 1868 (three weeks)
Rebecca Drew Spencer 1869 - 1912
Charles A Drew 1872 - 1897
Bertha M Drew Lowman 1872 - 1949
Anna Belle Drew Bishop 1873 - 1924

On February 7, 1875, Martin married Martha Ann Cochran.

Elizabeth Drew Miller 1877 - 1913
James Ervin Drew 1881 - 1959

Ann Cochran Drew died on June 4, 1916. In the 1920 Census Martin is listed as widowed and 82 years old living in the Jefferson County Home. He died on September 21, 1920.
