Joseph Martin KAELIN was born in Einsiedeln, Schwyz, Switzerland to Jacob Franz and Josepha Meinrada (KURIGER) KAELIN. He immigrated to the US in 1888, at the age of 20, along with his younger brother Dominick.
He married Salome TRINKLER in 1895 and they had five children:

Salome died in May of 1905. He remarried in 1906.
