Donald V. Clabaugh, 94, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, December 29, 2014, at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus, Nebraska, with Rev. Cindi Stewart officiating. Interment will be on Wednesday, January 7 at 1:00 PM in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Friday, January 2 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Saturday from 10:00 - 11:00 AM at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday at 10:45 AM at the church.

Don was born August 26, 1920, in Monroe, Nebraska, to his parents Harmon and Gertrude (Horton) Clabaugh. The family moved to Columbus with their business after his kindergarten year. He graduated from Kramer High School and married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy I. Drinnin on December 18, 1940, in Columbus. Together they ran the Columbus Hatchery until their retirement in 1992.

He was educated at the University of Nebraska Lincoln and was drafted into the Army in 1944. He served in the “Battle of the Bulge” and was awarded the Bronze Star for his action in WWII. Don was instrumental in the drive to eradicate pullorum disease in chicken stock. He was a faithful member of Rotary International attending over 50 years of weekly meetings without a miss and was awarded the Paul P Harris award from Rotary. Don was a Freemason through Masonic Lodge Lebanon Lodge 323 in Columbus. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus and served in many leadership capacities.

As an avid fisherman, he enjoyed his family cabin, boating, and teaching the grandkids how to fish. Don loved life, enjoyed friends, served his community and country selflessly always looking for the best in things and people. A real gentleman. He was not afraid to laugh with people, not at them, and was not afraid to laugh at himself, too.

Grandchildren - David (Suanne) Boswell of Columbus, NE; Cindy (Sam) Avila of Columbus, Suzanne Clabaugh of Papillion, NE; and John (Megan) Clabaugh of Gretna, NE
Great Grandchildren - Austin and Ethan Boswell, Trevor and Brandon Avila all of Columbus, and Edyn Clabaugh of Gretna
