Her father remarried promptly after the demise of Alice's mother Lucinda Nichols, his first wife. Logically, Amanda Alice wasn't fond of forced childcare. Alice, as the oldest, would be responsible for helping her new stepmothers rear several 1/2 siblings; she was the built in housekeeper/baby sitter.
