SNOW HILL | Eva Cornelia "Connie" Mattocks Mewborn, 88, of Snow Hill, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2014, at her home. She was born April 20, 1926, in Maysville, Jones County, North Carolina, the third child of Noland Nash Mattocks and Eva Cornelia Gillette Mattocks. After graduation from Maysville High School in 1943, Mrs. Mewborn attended East Carolina Teachers College, studying elementary education and graduating in 1947. After teaching in Selma and Angier, Mrs. Mewborn came to teach in Snow Hill, where she met her husband of fifty-five years, George Lemuel Mewborn, Jr. Mrs. Mewborn continued as a teacher in kindergarten and first grade in the Greene County Schools, and in 2011 she was recognized for her service to education by inclusion in East Carolina University's Education Hall of Fame. The Mewborns were married December 22, 1953, and Mrs. Mewborn became an active member of the Snow Hill community. She was a founding member of the Cardinal Garden Club, a long-time member of the Afternoon Bridge Club, and a Cub Scout leader when her sons were young. The Mewborns were long-time members of Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church where Mrs. Mewborn served actively in Christian education ministry, with the United Methodist Women, and in various finance positions. Mrs. Mewborn was an artist in her gardening, cooking, needlework, and painting, sharing her talents with her family and friends through the years. Mrs. Mewborn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, brothers Noland Randolph Mattocks and wife Delia Douglas Mattocks of Rose Hill, and Fred Dennis Mattocks and wife Annie Lois Russ Mattocks, of Gaffney, South Carolina; brothers- and sisters-in-law Dr. John Moses Mewborn and wife Margaret MacNeill Mewborn, Ima Eula Mewborn, Beulah Barbara Mewborn, Nina Lee Mewborn Garner and husband Varner Rayford Garner, Henry Drew Mewborn, Quentin Alexander Mewborn, Marvin Bruce Mewborn and wife Mabel Parker Mewborn, Manora Mewborn Nunn and husband Malcolm Nunn, and Dorothy Griffin Nunn. She is survived by her devoted sons George Lemuel Mewborn, III of Snow Hill; Noland Mattocks Mewborn and wife Denise Karmolinski Mewborn of Hickory; Robert Fields Mewborn and wife Linda Rose Mewborn of Ayden; grandchildren Catherine Mattocks Mewborn of Athens, Georgia; Michele Beres Waggoner, Robert Andrew Mewborn, George Ryan Mewborn, and Eva Rose Mewborn, all of Ayden; and great-granddaughters Marissah Marie Waggoner and Maria Belle Waggoner of Ayden. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Ailine Eloise Mewborn and Mary Ellen Mozingo Mewborn of Greenville, and many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. Her family is especially grateful for the care and friendship of Janice and Wayne Raper, Patricia Garcia, and many loving family members and friends. Following a family graveside service, a Memorial Service will be held Sunday, December 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church, 107 West Greene Street with Rev. Martin Armstrong presiding. The family will receive friends after the service in the Fellowship Hall and at other times at the Mewborn home, 105 Lasitter Road. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Calvary Memorial Endowment, Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 445, Snow Hill, NC 28580.
