WILLIAM BURT, SR. 26. MARY SPRADLING

William Burt, Sr. was b. 9—15—1771, in South Carolina. His
father was probably William Burt, b. 3—27—1736, in Newton Parish,
Virginia,* who was in South Carolina, as a clerk with the Naval
Commission, during the Revolutionary War.

William Burt, Sr. married twice. His first wife was Mary Spradling, b.
2—9—1778, in Georgia or SC. Mary was probably a daughter of Charles
Spradling, who lived in Charleston District, SC, and in Camden District,
SC, where his Will has purportedly been located, (Will Book A — 1,
210___65,2294(?), dated ? ).

The established children of William Burt, Sr. and Mary Spradling
are: William, Jr., James Jefferson and Reuben Thornton (Chapter
IX). (Additional information is given at the conclusion of this
chapter). William Burt, Sr. and all of his sons were farmers.

The name of William Burt appears in Georgia records as early as
1805, in Franklin Co., (a land draw). He is enumerated in the
1820 and 1830 censuses for Habersham Co., GA. On Feb. 12, 1822,
he was purportedly involved in land purchases in Franklin and
Habersham Counties. He drew for land in the 1827 Land Lotteries
in Carroll and Habersham Counties, Georgia.

Mary Spradling died on March 10, 1838, at the age of sixty, and
was buried in Habersham Co., GA, (present day Lumpkin Co.).

On June 12, 1841, the Bethel Baptist Church in Dawson Co., GA was
constituted, (in what was then Lumpkin Co.). William Burt, Sr.
was listed as a member of the organizing presbytery.

On March 29, 1850, William Burt, Sr. married his second wife,
Milly Glaze, who was born 1793, in North or South Carolina.
William was almost seventy—nine years of age. Milly was fifty—seven. They
were enumerated on the U. S. Population Census for 1850, Lumpkin Co., GA,
in the Ammicalola District, (p. 22, dwelling 1120; Win. Burt, Jr. was in
dwelling #19). An eight year old boy, Torrence Gilstrap (relationship
unknown) was residing with them.

William Burt, Sr. died on June 2, 1852, at the age of eighty. He
was purportedly buried in neighboring Dawson Co., GA.
