NEW YORK GUARD OFFICER

Funeral services for Francis C. E. von Sternberg, veteran officer of the 13th Regiment, New York National Guard, were held today at the Fairchild Chapel, 86 Lefferts Place. Burial was in Evergreens Cemetery.

Mr. von Sternberg died Tueaday in his home, 933 LaFayette Ave., at the age of 64.

The previous day he went as usual to the offices of Barnhard, Parr & Fagin, 373 Broadway, Manhattan, wholesale dry goods firm, of which he was bookkeeper since 1926. Previously he had been connected with H. A. Chaflin & Co., predecessor of the present firm, for 35 or 40 years.

Born in Louisville, Ky., Mr. von Sternberg had lived in Brooklyn for about 50 years.

His military career began when he joined the 71st Regiment, Manhattan as a private on Nov. 15, 1888. He transferred to the 13th Regiment in this borough in 1891. Honorably discharged in 1894, he re-enlisted three years later.

He rose to Second Lieutenant in 1902, to First Lieutenant the following year, and was elected Captain of Company C in 1906.

During World War I he trained many guardsmen prepatory to their entrance into the Army.

He was a former president of the Veterans Association of the 13th Regiment, Aurora Grata Consistory, Scottish Rite, and the Shrine.

Surviving are a brother, Julius R., vice president of the Manufacturers Trust Comany and former president of the Commonwealth Bank, and a sister, Mrs. Arnold P. Frowein, of Independence, Mo.
