Henry Arensdorf
The people of Ellinwood were deeply grieved last Friday morning to hear of the death of Henry Arensdorf, which occurred at his home in this city the night before, death being due to diabetes. He had been a sufferer from this disease for some time, and while the community was greatly shocked to hear of his death, yet it was not expected.
Henry Arensdorf was born in Jackson county, Iowa, near St. Donatus, in April, 1852, where he grew to manhood, coming to Barton county about thirty-four years ago and settling on a farm a few miles east of Ellinwood where he lived continuously until a short time ago, when on account of failing health he turned the farm over to the boys and moved to this city.
He was married September 14, 1882, to Mary Sauer, and to this union two children were born, Joseph, who died in infancy and Christian, who now resides on the old home place. Mrs. Arensdorf died in January 1889 and on November 20, 1889, he was again married to Catherine Doherty. Three children were born to them. Mrs. Mary Klepper, of this city and Peter and Cecil, who made their home with their father, the second wife dying April 18, 1898.
Besides the children he leaves to mourn his loss, one brother and two sisters. J.P. Arensdorf, of Farmer, S. D., whose daughter, Miss Clara Arensdorf, has been here in attendance on her uncle during his illness and death. Mrs. Mary Mousel, of Germania, Iowa, an Sister M. Bassilissa, of St Mary’s Academy, at Quincy, Ill. Mr. Arensdorf had paid a visit to his brothers and sisters only last fall.
Relatives here to attend the funeral were Henry and Peter Arensdorf, of Kingman, Kansas. Mrs. Mary Doherty, of Byron, Oklahoma, and Denny Schaffer, of Spearville.
Funeral services were conducted at the St. Joseph’s Catholic church in this city Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Father Emmerich and Requiem High Mass read Wednesday morning, interment being made in the Ellinwood cemetery. The universal esteem and respect for the deceased was attested to by the hundreds who attended to pay their last respects, the funeral being probably the largest of any in the city.
Mr. Arensdorf was a sturdy, upright man who was loved and respected by all who made his acquaintance. A man who in all walks of life lived a thorough Christian life and did all in his power to help a down-trodden brother, a devoted husband and father, a kind neighbor and a loyal citizen and in his death not only the relatives, but the entire community feels the sense of a great personal loss. With the many friends of the family, the Leader extends deepest sympathy.
