Charles Emerson "Toots" Mackey, age 87, of Jackson passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 at Spalding Regional Hospital.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1927 in Jackson, to Paul Mackey and Odessa Tomlin Mackey.

Toots served as an MP in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from General Motors with 35 years of service. Toots was a bailiff for Butts County for 16 years and was a greeter at Sherrell-Westbury Funeral Home.

He enjoyed bowling, traveling to the mountains, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Toots was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Gilbert Mackey.

Charles is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Rick Stewart and Kathy and Bill Kitchens all of Jackson; grandchildren, Jeff Stewart of Jackson, Beth Speigner of Dunwoody, Terri Kyle, and Dale Kitchens both of Jackson; great-grandchildren, Austin Kyle, Maci Kyle, and Kalee Kitchens all of Jackson, Nora Speigner, Emerson Speigner, and George Speigner all of Dunwoody; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, Millie.

Funeral services for Charles "Toots" Mackey were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at Sherrell Memorial Chapel with Dr. Benny Tate and the Rev. Becky Baker officiating. Interment followed at Jackson City Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening. Flowers will be accepted, however, those desiring may make a contribution to the Live the Vision Building Fund, c/o Macedonia Baptist Church, 151 Macedonia Church Road, Jackson, GA 30233, in memory of Toots.

Sherrell-Westbury Funeral Home, 212 E. College St., Jackson, is serving the Mackey family.
