On May 12th 1930 every member of the Bachelder household was counted for the once-in-a-decade U. S. census. The family resided at 72 Cottage Street at the home they owned in Athol, Massachusetts. At home were: Charles W., 38, a garage proprietor, Leola C., 37, Thelma, 14, Lawrence E., 12, Marion, 11, Clarence W., 8, Gordon C., 5, and Donald F., 2.

By 1940, at the same address, only the four youngest Bachelder children remained at home. Clarence's father, in this census, was listed as a proprietor of gas stations. His sister, Marion, 21, had joined the workforce as a bookkeeper, most likely, at one of her father's stations. Clarence did not have an occupation listed but he had reportedly completed his first year of college at that point.
