Mary Joan McCluskey

Mary McCluskey, 88, of Caldwell, died Sunday, November 2nd.

Mother and I thought we should co-author her obituary. A minor stroke took her eyesight, but she could talk and had a keen memory. So, on a beautiful August morning, we talked and talked and talked. Let's start at the beginning.

Mary was born July 15, 1926, in Pomona, California to Allan and Joan (Golden) Cutler.

At ten years old, the family moved to Los Altos Hills, California. At age 13, Mary's mother unexpectedly died. Her father, thinking he could not raise a girl, placed Mary in the California Convent of Sacred Heart, Menlo Park. After graduating from the Convent high school, Mary moved to Stockton to live with the family of her lifelong friend, Nan Towles.

On one Friday night, Mary and Nan attended a dance at a local Air Corps base. It was at this dance that she met Alfred McCluskey, a young soldier training to fly B-17's. She didn't like Al, at first, and tried to "ditch" him at the dance. He was a little wild for Mary. But, Al followed her home, relentlessly pursued her affection, after which they subsequently married on March 8, 1945, in Kingman, Arizona. This marvelous marriage lasted 58 years. Al passed in 2003.

Al & Mary moved to Caldwell, Idaho, in 1946. Her son, Andrew Harry McCluskey, was born when she was twenty. Her daughter, Eileen Ann Alberts, was born when she was 21. "Dad and I thought we would never stop having children."

Al worked in the family business, while Mary was a stay-at-home mom. They later founded McCluskey Commissary. Mary provided the foundation for a loving family. The family enjoyed weekends in the Owyhees, hunting, fishing, and dancing. She was an avid bridge player. She was fond of watching boxing and golf. I find all of the above somewhat unusual, as I can guarantee none of these activities were learned in the Convent.

Mary became "The wife of the Mayor" when Al was elected in 1980. While she performed her wifely duties, attending events with a smile, she was not fond of being the wife of the Mayor. Mary was a private woman and did not relish the limelight.

After retirement, Mary and Al spent years RVing to Mexico, while wintering in Green Valley, Arizona.
Mother joked, "How can you make me a glamour queen in my obituary?"

Well, I would call her a loving mother, kind while making her children toe the line. Challenging us to do our best. Transferring her values to her children. Eileen and I feel lucky to be raised in a loving family. She was sweet and classy, never wanting to be a burden to others. A lady.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Allan and Joan; her husband Alfred; brother Charles Cutler of Sacramento; and brother John Cutler of Tiburon, California. She is survived by children Andrew (Laurie) McCluskey, Caldwell; Eileen (Rick) Alberts, Roy, Utah; grandchildren Melissa (Sean) Hackett (Middleton), Molly McCluskey (Boise), Teri Casey, Ogden, Utah, Shannon Miller, Ogden, Utah, Bret Jeffrey Alberts, Woods Cross, Utah, and seven great-grandchildren.

"I want to thank the Burns family (Laurie's family) for their love, and all of my friends for your kindness, and friendship."

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 7th at Dakan Funeral Chapel, 504 South Kimball, Caldwell. Memorial contributions may be made to the Caldwell YMCA, 3720 Indiana Avenue, Caldwell, ID 83605.
