Alden C. Shawhan,72,financier & philanthropist, & one of Blanchester's best known citizens, passed away at Baroness Erlanger Hospital, Chattanooga, Tenn., shortly before midnight Monday following an illness of three weeks from a heart ailment.
Mr. Shawhan, with extensive land interests around Blanchester, & business & real estate interests,in the Tenn. city, had almost a dozen large farms in Clinton & Warren counties & divided his time between the two places, maintaining a residence in Chattanooga as well as Blanchester
He was a native of Warren county, having been born near Osceola March 28, 1871, the son of David & Mary Shawhan. He was a member or the First Universalist Church here & served as a trustee of that church. He also was a member of the Blanchester Library Board.
For many years Mr. Shawhan & his wife operated extensive concession interests at fairs & amusement parks throughout the South, from which a considerable portion of their wealth was acquired. Following the death of his wife a number of years ago Mr. Shawhan began spending most of his time in Blanchester again taking care of his aged mother whose death occurred two or three years go.
A member of the Butlerville Masonic lodge, he was a member of both the Scottish Rite & Shrine at Chattanooga.
Short services were held in Chattanooga Wednesday, & last rites are to be held Friday at 2 P.M. in the Eichelberger Funeral Home here by the Rev. George Thornburn & the Rev. R.S. Kellerman, of the First Universalist Church, with the body to be interred in the mausoleum erected in the Blanchester I.O.O.F. cemetery, by Mr. Shawhan for his family.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 P.M. Thursday.
Closest surviving relatives of the deceased are several cousins, living in this vicinity, & Mrs. Neuberne H. Brown,Sr., of this place, who is a sister-in-law.
