Charles James "Charlie" Yerian
1920 - 2014

Early Life: Charles "Charlie" was born April 19, 1920, on Harvey Lane, in Corvallis, Montana, to Asa Ishem and Amanda Catherine White Yerian, the ninth of the their eleven children. The family moved to Hamilton Heights Road, and then to Yerian Lane, where Charlie attended school in the one room schoolhouse in that area and helped his father on the family ranch.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: At the age of 21, Charlie began ranching on his own in the Hamilton Heights area. Charlie married Louise Louisa Palin, in July 1941, in Wallace, Idaho; together they raised five children. Charlie and Louise parted in 1979, after which Charlie continued to live and ranch in the Hamilton Heights area. Charlie was a Master Teamster who did all of his farming with draft horses, only conceding to use that old Farmall and farm hand to stack his hay. Charlie was well known throughout the Northwest for his abilities in training his draft horses and competing with them in weight pulls and precision driving. The number of ribbons and trophies lining the walls of his home, bear witness to his success. Charlie liked to win, but he was always close by to help a fellow "puller". Charlie was a life member of the Bitterroot Draft Horse and Mule Club and was inducted into the Montana Draft Horse and Mule Association Hall of Fame in 2007. Charles James "Charlie" Yerian passed away Friday, December 19, 2014, at his home in Corvallis, Montana, of natural causes. He was 94.

"It was a cold, misty early evening when Charlie heard a whinny at the door. Charlie looked out and saw his faithful horse Nita, saddled and ready to go. Charlie mounted up, his chaps in the usual place, draped over the saddle horn and a rain slicker tied to the cantle. As they rode east into the Sapphire Mountains, it seemed that Nita knew exactly where she was going. They rode high, up above Mountain House, then suddenly saw two giant fir trees, one on each side of the trail. As they rode between the trees, a sudden gust of wind blew the mist away and Charlie saw the light of a campfire in the valley below. Nita picked up her walking horse stride and down they went toward the campfire. The faces around the campfire were dim, but their voices were all familiar. Those cowboys were outlined in a faint glow, almost as if they had wings. Come and set a spell Charlie, said one of the cowboys, and have a cup. Charlie dismounted, walked toward the fire, while at the same time looking at the two big Belgians standing in the nearby corral. Damn he thought, they look just like Ned and Ribbon. One of the boys at the fire, who they called Pete, stood up and said, welcome home Charlie, finish your coffee, and we'll ride up to the Big House and you can meet the Boss. After that meeting, and as Charlie walked from that Mansion, he felt a pleasant tingling on each shoulder and he was surrounded by that same faint glow. At that moment, Charlie Yerian became an Angel. Charlie now rides in a place where the grass is always sweet, green and knee-high, the water in the creek is clear and cool, and the wind is always at his back. Charlie is truly back at home at last, doing what he does best, in that place we call Heaven."
