Burial rites were held Tuesday for Miss Barbara Birkhofer, a former city treasurer, who passed away several days previously after several months illness.
Barbara Victoria Birkhofer, better known to Alexandria people as Bessie Birkhofer, was born in Minneapolis on Feb. 15, 1891. She came to Alexandria with her parents in 1901 and spent all her life here. She attended the Alexandria schools and also St. Benedict's college at St. Joseph.
She worked in several local stores and for the past six years she was employed at Schaffer's Department store. Last Dec. 1 she retired because of ill health. She also held the office of city treasurer for eleven years, the position which was previously held by her father.
Miss Birkhofer underwent a serious operation in May of last year from which she never fully recovered. She was taken seriously ill about three weeks ago and was taken to the hospital where she passed away Feb. 5, at the age of 58 years.
She is survived by her mother, three sisters, Mrs. Walter Bradford of Alexandria, Mrs. Sherm Costello, also of Alexandria, and Mrs. G. A. Konkel of Akron, Ohio and one brother, Conrad of Duluth.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Mary's church, Fr. Wm. A. Renner officiating. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery. The pallbearers were George Buscher, A. C. Schneiderhan, Robert Chan, Carl Erickson, Louis Schaffer and Bennie Osterberg.
