The Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin Co., PA, 1896 by J.M. Runk & Co., Chambersburg, PA, p 142-45 has data on "the Sloans of Hanover." Robert Sloan, born 1769, native of Hanover township, was the second SON of ALEXANDER Sloan, 1744-1812 and Jean Moor. In addition to Robert, they had children: John, b 1767; Alexander, 1771; Isabella, 1773; James, 1775-1 Dec 1820; William, 1777-1818 and Jean, married Alexander Bell, D 1832 in OH. "Shortly after he removed to the city of New York, but about 1812 permanently located at Harrisburg, where he pursued his avocation. He became one of the old borough's prominent citizens - esteemed by all for his industry, energy and uprightness of character. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian church thirteen years, "possessing," says Rev. Dr. Robinson, "the confidence of the church as a man of God, noble and blameless in his uprightness." He died at Harrisburg, December 4, 1833, aged 64 years. His wife, Sarah McCormick, was one of the most amiable of women, whose life was characterized by a faithful devotion to all the highborn virtues of Christian womanhood, only ending with her days on earth, which closed on the 5th of April, 1843. The children of Robert and Sarah Sloan, who reached maturity, were as
follows: 1) Eliza, m., first, Thomas Baird; secondly, James Rutherford Boyd. Mrs. Boyd survives and resides in Harrisburg.

"1820--ROBERT SLOAN. SAMUEL AGNEW, JOSEPH A. McJIMSEY. ROBERT SLOAN was born in Hanover township, Lancaster county, Pa., in the year 1769. His ancestors were from the north of Ireland, coming to America prior to 1736. His FATHER, ROBERT (sic) SLOAN, SR., was an elder in the old Hanover Presbyterian church, one of the landmarks of the Scotch Irish settlement in Pennsylvania. His grandfather had also been an elder, and this in connection with his son Alexander, show a record of four generations in direct line of ruling elders of the Presbyterian church. Robert's early years were spent on his father's farm, but approaching his majority, he learned the occupation of cabinet-maker. On the 30th of March, 1799, he married Sarah McCormick, of Hanover, and shortly afterwards removed to the city of New York. In 1812 he returned to Harrisburg, where he passed the remainder of his life. "Mr. Sloan," says Rev. Dr. Robinson, "was evidently a good man, a Christian full of faith and prayer and good works. He possessed the confidence of the community where he resided to an unbounded degree, and those who knew him intimately had for him a regard that rose to perfection. He was a most faithful office-holder, always at his post in the sanctuary and the meetings for social prayer. In the matter of prayer he was peculiarly gifted, being evidently taught of God, and blessed with an unction from the Holy Ghost. He was a man of wide and accurate theological knowledge. The doctrines of the Presbyterian church, as taught in her standards, he heartily embraced as the system of theology contained in the sacred Scriptures and adhered to them through life with unwavering fidelity." Mr. Sloan died at Harrisburg in December 1833, in the 64th year of his age. Of his family, Alexander Sloan (of whom mention is made in this series of articles), served the church as elder for over half a century." Per the Harrisburg Telegraph (PA) dated 10 Feb 1894 (see posted photo).

Article on several generations of the Sloans, begins with Robert Sloan. Includes: "Robert, the second son, (brother of John,) was a citizen of Harrisburg, where he prosecuted a very successful business. He married Sarah McCormick, March "28," 1799, and had by her six children, Alexander, John, William, Eliza, Isabella and Mary Jane. Their first son and daughter are yet living; the rest have gone to that "undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns." Their youngest son, William, died at St. Paul, Minn., March 17, 1880, at, the age of 65 years, 43 of which had been spent in the medical department of the regular army. He was in the Seminole war in Florida, in the Mexican war and the war of the rebellion, in which latter he was made Colonel "for meritorious services at various military posts." Alexander, the third son, married Miss Jane French, and settled in Williamsport on the Susquehannah river. He raised a family of six children, Robert, French, Alexander, Maria, Eliza and Mary. James, the fourth son, married Miss Nancy M. Creight, (sic - it's McCreight) and had also a family of six children, Alexander, James, William, Jennett, Elizabeth and Sarah Mary. He settled on the farm given to him by his father. They were members of the Presbyterian Church, then under the pastoral care of Rey. James Snodgrass. William, the youngest son, was never married. He remained on the home farm with his sister Elizabeth. Of him we greatly regret to say, that he was the only one of this extensive connection that ever became addicted to the use of strong drink. He died in middle life. Jane, the youngest daughter, married Alexander Bell, and had two children, Alexander and Ann."

Robert and Sarah's daughter Eliza Sloan Baird, (21 Dec 1800 - 5 Feb 1886) married widower James Rutherford Boyd (13 Oct 1790 - 29 Dec 1865, his 3rd wife). They had Boyd children: Robert Sloan, Isabella McCormick, George William, Eliza Potts, Maria and James Alexander.
