He graduated from the University of Rochester an obtained a M.A. from the University of Illinois. During 1930-31 he was on the faculty of Temple University in Philadelphia. He then began the study of medicine at the University of Rochester, but died young of a brain tumor.

He also had an interest in music, having been a member in the Troubadors, a musical fraternity, in college. He was a soloist in the Lake Avenue Baptist and Salem Evangelical churches in Rochester.
