THE LATE ROBERT MARTIN
Robert Martin died Friday morning at his home, 19 Mill street, Plains, of complications. He was born at Coxho, County Durham, England, July 23, 1844
Mr. Martin at the age of 18 enlisted as a private at Pottsville, Pa., in Co. 1, 38th Pa. Regt Veteran Volunteers, Army of Potomac, under Capt. Francis D. Rock. He was in the battles of Bull Run, Petersburg, Fredericksburg, Wilderness and Spotsylvania, and others. After serving three years in the Civil War, he was honorably discharged.
He was brought to this country by his parents, George and Mary Slater Martin, when one year old. The family settled in Locus Dale, Schuylkill Co., living there about twenty years. From there they moved to Shickshinny, finally locating in Plains. He was in charge of the sinking of the D. & H. shaft at Hudson when that was first opened and was in the employ of that company until seventeen months ago. He was an expert miner and his advice was sought by many inexperienced miners and even foremen.
Mr. Martin served as justice of the peace of Plains for one term.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin on March 14, 1915 observed the fortieth anniversary of their marriage. They have been residents of Plains for 50 years. Mr. Martin was married March 14, 1875 by Rev. Wm. Hill. He is survived by four children by this union, Mrs. F. C. Brower, Philadelphia; Mrs. J. N. Lintern, Mrs. Walter E. Smith, Mrs. Harry O. Brown, of Plains, and Miss Ross, at home. He was the father of two children by a former marriage, George of Scranton and Mrs. Thos Woodward, deceased, and by the following grandchildren: Stanley Woodward, Myrtle and Robert Smith. He also is survived by the following brother, John Martin of Plains and sisters Mrs. M. Swayze and Mrs. Jos Goss, of Scranton. Mrs. Geo. Hilbert, Kingston.
