Jack was born April 12, 1916 in Bayard to George and Grace (Guard) Hill.He attended rural schools during his childhood. Jack drove a team of four horses at the age of twelve for his father grading roads and irrigation ditches. He did this for two years at which time he returned to school and graduated from Bayard High School in 1936.Jack met his future wife, Ruby Lincoln, in high school. They were married on September 14, 1936 in Gering. To this union, two children were born.Jack’s early work history began with carpentry. He worked for Defense jobs in five states before returning to Bayard in 1943. He was inducted into the Army on January 29, 1944, spending two years in France, Belgium, and Germany. Jack was wounded twice during this time and received a Purple Heart for the first injury and a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster for the second injury. He also received a Good Conduct medal and the European Ribbon with two battle stars. Jack was discharged on December 18, 1945 and returned to Bayard.Jack was employed 23 years for Searle and Chapin Lumber Co, then ten years with KK Propane, and another ten years for the Morrill County Road Department.Jack was a member of the Bayard Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the DAV, and former member of the American Legion Post 200, VFW, Bayard City Council, and Trustee of the Presbyterian Church. He was Pack Master of Cub Scouts in Bayard. Jack was also an avid Nebraska Cornhusker Fan. Preceding Jack in death were his parents; his ten siblings; and son-in-law, George E. Parker.
