"Donald Kenneth Amick, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandpa and great-grandpa, went to join his Lord and Savior on Sept. 14, 2010. Don worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 23 years, starting as a laborer and working up to track foreman and, later, track welder. While welding track one day, he was hit by a train. He survived his injuries, but the accident ended his railroad career. He enjoyed farming and raising animals, which he did for several years in California before moving to Safford. Never able to sit and do nothing, Don started a small used furniture and antiques store in his back yard. He enjoyed meeting different folks who stopped by the store and had many repeat customers. Don was also helping others in any way he could, never expecting anything in return. His great-grandchildren were a source of great happiness to him, and he enjoyed attending their ball games and other activities. He also loved cooking with them and taught them to make jerky and homemade bread and rolls, pies and puddings. Don was born in Pastura, N.M., March 28, 1934, to Ray and Ruby Glass Amick. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Elbert and Rodney; and sisters Maxine Valencia and Juanita Juaquez. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Elsa; daughters Diane (Ken) Cocke of Safford, Dorothy Show and Marge (David) Smith of Herald, Calif.; brother Clifford Amick of Manteca, Calif.; sister Evelyn St. Andre of Phoenix and twin sister Dorothy (Graham) Stewart of Willcox; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson, as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Donald lived his life working hard and helping others at every opportunity. He deeply loved his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all of us who knew and loved him. Arrangements were entrusted to Safford Funeral Home; a private memorial service is planned for a future date."
