Born Johanna Estella Grotegut in Marshfield (later changed to Coos Bay), Oregon, she was nicknamed Jennie as a little girl.

She changed her name to Jennie Grote by 1898 when her mother Louisa and sister Ada changed theirs to the same spelling. Brother William Henry would change his name to William Henry Groat in 1896. Father Henry would retain the Grotegut spelling until his death.

Jennie married Walter Gibbens on 7 August 1905 and, after Walter's death, she married Martin Reardon in August of 1920.

She met Walter while working at the St. Francis hotel as a maid. They both survived the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and had to sleep on a park bench the night of the quake. Jennie was pregnant at the time.

She ran boarding rooms in San Francisco, both before and after Walter died and became a farmer in Fresno with Martin. She kept the farm after he died for a number of years.

She eventually moved to Sacramento to be closer to her daughter, Dorothy, and passed away in 1956.
