Dr. Olin E. Newton, 86, was born in Fayette, Ala., on June 27, 1928, to Dr. Olin E. Newton Sr., a country doctor, and Eileen Davis Newton. He passed from this life on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Georgia, a Master of Arts in musicology from North Texas State University and a Ph.D. in modern languages from Louisiana State University. He was also a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army in Germany as a chaplain's assistant and played the organ during worship services for the troops.
Dr. Newton enjoyed a lengthy and fulfilling academic career, which he began as an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Arlington. He culminated in his tenure of more than 30 years as a professor emeritus of modern languages at Stephen F. Austin, where he taught German and French.
Dr. Newton lived in Nacogdoches for 50 years, and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dianne Rogers Newton; his son, Everett Newton; several nieces and nephews, and the many friends and students whose lives he touched during his time here.
