Richard H. "Gus" Brown, 93

Pompano Beach, Fl - Richard H. "Gus" Brown, 93, of Pompano Beach, FL, and former resident of Wellsville, died Sunday, December 7, 2014. He was born September 28, 1921, in New Cumberland, WV, the son of the late Richard E. and Olive (McCrae) Brown. He was raised in Wellsville and graduated from Wellsville High School where he was a standout player for the Wellsville Tigers football team. In his teen years, Gus served in the CCC to help his family. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was employed with Ohio Bell Telephone Company for thirty-five years. In 1962, he was transferred to Dayton, OH, where he served as supervising foreman. In the early 1980s, Gus returned to Wellsville with his wife, Mary Lou, where he was a member of the Wellsville Historical Society, VFW Post 5647, Elks Lodge 1040, Kiwanis, and American Legion Post 70. He was most proud of being on the Wellsville Veterans Memorial Council where he was one of the veterans who took part in the twenty-one gun salute at numerous military funerals. Wellsville Kiwanis recognized him for his honor and commitment to various projects throughout the years. He was a fourth degree Mason and Shriner. He served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Wellsville First Christian Church where he was a member. Gus was also a member of the Wellsville Care and Share Organization and active in collecting, repairing, and distributing toys to needy Wellsville children. He also collected and donated coats to the Wellsville schools for children in need. He derived much joy from helping others. Survivors include the love of his life, Mary Louise (Petty) Brown, whom he married February 3, 1946; two daughters: Cathy Casey and her husband, Mike, of Laurel, MS, and Cindy Brown of Cincinnati, OH; one son: Rick Brown of Pompano Beach, FL; one sister: Alice McDowell; and one brother: William Brown. Also surviving are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren whom he adored. Gus was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and three brothers.
