Yeri Jose Guadalupe Garcia was on his way home to celebrate his 19th birthday with his family in Arkansas when he was killed in a drive-by shooting on U.S. 60 in Mesa, Arizona at about 3:30pm on Friday December 9, 2005. He was driving a Dodge pickup truck and towing a trailer westbound approaching Val Vista Drive in Mesa about 3:30 p.m. when a late-model four-door Cadillac pulled up to the truck's passenger side and someone fired a shotgun from the Cadillac's rear window into the truck's front passenger window missing the passenger but hitting and killing Yeri. There were three other passengers in the truck that were able to bring the vehicle to a stop and call 911. The dispatcher asked the caller if he can administer CPR until paramedics arrive but the caller says no, because Yeri was shot in the mouth. Another witness called 911 after hearing what "sounded like two bullets."

The female caller did not see the shooting, but said she saw the drivers of a tan Cadillac "trying to get off the freeway as fast as they can and driving all crazy."
Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Chuck Trapani said investigators still have no motive and are trying to track down the suspect vehicle described as a late-model shiny, metallic tan or champagne-colored four-door Cadillac. Police haven't released any specifics about the suspects because the witnesses have provided conflicting descriptions.

Yeri's mother, Rosa Becerra, planned to cook enchiladas and coconut cake for his birthday dinner. Yeri was looking forward to taking his girlfriend out as well.

In the three weeks prior to his death Yeri had been working in the West with his close friends building carports and storage facilities. They just finished a two-day job in Globe, Arizona and were headed to Gallup, New Mexico, to drop off equipment and pick up their paychecks before heading to Arkansas.
Yeri Garcia had nine brothers and sisters and moved with his family to Arkansas from northern Mexico nine years ago.

Friends and family described him as a quiet, honest and a dependable man that loved jokes, watching and playing football and soccer, and drag racing. He would also send money to his mother to help pay the bills for his large family. Donna Sanchez, the manager of Coast to Coast Carports Inc. the company Yeri worked for said he always had a sweet smile on his face and was always so nice. "He never bothered anyone and just minded his own business and was just trying to make a living."
