Jean "Pat" de Pendleton, 94, of Kingsport, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Asbury Place/Baysmont in Kingsport, following a short illness.

Born in Geneva, NY on March 17, 1920, a daughter of the late Theodore Emmett and Jean Gardner Gaty, she has resided in this area since moving from Radford, VA in 1998.

She was a veteran of World War II, having served as an Army Nurse where she eventually retired from the Army with the rank of Major. She taught nursing at Bridgeport University as well as Norwalk Community College, in Connecticut, where she helped establish the nursing program; she also taught nursing at Radford University, Radford, VA, where she retired.

Pat was a member of the Radford Senior Citizens writing club. She loved reading, writing, poetry, traveling and spending time with her family and enjoyed swimming her entire life. She was very good with animals since she was raised on a farm. She was a very kind person and had a good sense of humor, but being kind was her most important characteristic.

In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, the Rev. Professor Eric B. de Pendleton (2001) and one brother Theodore Emmett Gaty, Jr.

Pat is survived by her daughter Juanita Mitchell and husband, Eugene of Kingsport, TN; one step-daughter: Sylvia de Pendleton of Brockville, Ontario, Canada; one step-son: Mervyn de Pendleton and wife Irene, of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; grandchildren: Winston Mitchell and husband, Dustin Scott; Cameron Mitchell, Sinclair Mitchell, Eugene Sun Mitchell, Chelsea Williams, Dawn Martin and husband, John; Jennifer Gates and husband, Brendan; Janet Stenhouse, Sharon Donchev and husband, Rasho; Julie Roth and husband Dave; Michael de Pendleton, David Gadreau; fifteen great-grandchildren; sister: Allene Hatch of Hudson, NY; four nieces and nephews. Special friend, Helen Lane of Kingsport.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Preston Place and Asbury Place.

The family will have a gathering and memorial service close to her birthday.

Internment with Military Honors will be conducted Saturday, December 27, 2014 at West View Cemetery in Radford, VA. Military honors will be accorded by the VFW Post #5311. Those attending services are asked to assemble at the graveside by 11:45 a.m.

Honorary pallbearers are Winston Mitchell, Cameron Mitchell, Eugene Mitchell, Buck Gaty, Sinclair Mitchell.
