On Sunday, December 7, 2014, Lillian Frances "Boots" Acuff Puckett Cooper departed the shackles of her earthly life to receive her heavenly body free of illness and earthly struggles.
Boots was born in a log cabin in Goodrich, Texas on June 25, 1923 to Prentiss Lamar Acuff and Lula Vera Henderson Acuff. She attended school in Goodrich and graduated from there. Her father died when Boots was barely six weeks old. When her mother was married a few years later to Rafe Henry Smith, six step-siblings came to join them. And when new babies arrived in the new marriage, Boots and her brother, Lee Douglas, welcomed each of them as each sibling was born to the home and assisted in rearing them. She loved telling stories about the first new siblings, a set of twins, and their adventures and misadventures in caring for them.
Upon her graduation from Goodrich High School, Boots worked in the retail industry in Livingston. During World War II she married James Puckett and followed him to his military posts in the United States. After the war they returned to Livingston and she returned to working in retail. Many customers relied upon her opinion in purchasing fine clothing at the dress shop she managed for the Davis family. She gave up that position to become involved in various business ventures with her husband. Then in September 1956 Boots and James were blessed with the child they had long desired with the birth of their son, Jimmie Wayne. He quickly became the center of their attention.
In July of 1984 Boots found herself without her partner when James was suddenly taken in an accident. In that stoic determination that she had developed while growing up in a large family in a log cabin, she met adversity and did not flinch. She toiled diligently to carry on without her business partner and husband. In 1992 a relationship with a childhood friend blossomed into romance and Boots married Harwell Cooper. They had grown up together in Goodrich and Harwell's sisters and Boots had been lifelong friends. Boots relocated to Arizona with Harwell and they shared nineteen wonderful years together before his death in August of 2009. In May of 2010 she returned home to Livingston and was cared for by the staff at The Gardens until she relocated to Bay City on April 15, 2014, to be near her caregivers there. She was cared for by the staff at The Legacy. In the years that she spent back home in Texas, she and her nephew Bill (always Billy to her) enjoyed reliving the stories of her growing up and taking care of her younger siblings, adventures with friends and Grandma Henderson. Many happy memories were shared and treasured. During her years at The Gardens she especially treasured visits from her nephews Joe Henry Smith and Wallace (Babe Ray) Atchley. She commented about how pleased she was that they were in their churches. Her nieces and nephews and many friends will always remember her at the lake house preparing catfish and the trimmings for anyone who came for a visit. Those were such treasured memories.
Preceding her in death were her father and mother, her step-father, her brother Lee Douglas Acuff, her first husband James Puckett and her second husband Harwell Cooper, her step-siblings Elsie Belcher, Lucille Diamond, Clay Smith, Haskell Smith, Vesta McBride and Hubert Smith. Siblings from her mother's marriage to R. H. Smith who predeceased her were Alma Burchfield, Elmer (Jack) Smith, Maudelle Atchley and Carolyn Gaston. Two siblings, Norma Jean Hancock and Jimmy Ray Smith, both of Livingston survived her. Her sister-in-law, Opal Mitchamore of Baytown, Texas also survives Boots and her brother's widow, Mary Ola Acuff, of Bay City, Texas, along with numerous nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren and one son.
Boots was baptized in the Baptist Church at an early age and served in various capacities for many years. She was known for her devotion to her church, her friend Jeannine Wood became as close as another sister and continued to show her love and support through visits and always checking by phone. Those who had the special privilege of being loved by Boots and getting to care for her in her final years were her step-son Bobby Cooper and his wife Helen of White Mountain Lake, Arizona and Bill (her nephew) and Judy Acuff of Bay City, Texas. Boots stated many times that Helen was the daughter she never had and Helen has said Boots was a mother to her.
Serving as pall bearers are Joe Henry Smith and Wallace (Babe Ray) Atchley, Brett Acuff, Michael Mitchamore, Joe Keith Puckett and Ronnie Wood.
In lieu of floral donations, it is requested that donations be made to First Baptist Church, Alzheimer's research or a charity of your choice.
