Earl of Devon.

Lancastrian supporter during the Wars of the Roses. Son of Sir Hugh Courtenay of Coconnoc (Devon). Involved in the conspiracy against Richard III led by Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham in 1483. Was attainted but escaped to Brittainy, joining forces of Henry Tudor, later King Henry VII. Raised forces for Henry in Devon and Cornwall. After the Battle of Bosworth, received reversal of attainder. Received back Courtney estates from King Henry on 26 Oct. 1485. Attended Henry on expedition to France, 1491. Held Exeter against Perkin Warbeck, 1497 and was wounded in the arm by an arrow during the assault. Died 1509. Married distant cousin, Elizabeth Courtenay, daughter of Sir Philip Courtenay of Molland. Father of William Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon (d. 1511). (Source: Boyce, George.
