William M Hall lived in Monroe Township, Ashtabula County and was employed by a local sawmill when he met Marilla Niles, who became his wife. He became a farmer, residing in North Shenango Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

William was a Civil War veteran, with two enlistments. His second enlistment was in Co A, 211th Pennsylvania Volunteers. The unit mustered in September 1864 and soon thereafter saw action at Bermuda Hundred (Virginia). This regiment remained in Virginia for the duration of the war.

Private Hall was mortally wounded during the retaking of Fort Stedman at the Petersburg siege line on April 2, 1865. Wounded in the leg, he succumbed to this injury on July 4, 1865 at Fairfax Seminary Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia.

William and Marilla were parents of five boys - Hamilton, Thomas, Ezra, William, and Edward Hall - and one girl who died in childhood, Isadora. Marilla raised the children until her death in 1875, at which point Hamilton became guardian of the two youngest children, William and Edward.

Hamilton and Edward migrated west to Nebraska during the 1870's while Thomas and William remained in Ashtabula County (Ezra moved to Michigan). Thomas, Ezra and William all worked for the railroads. Edward became an attorney in David City, Nebraska and was active in local Republican politics. Hamilton raised a large family, and was a well-known teacher and farmer in Bellwood, Nebraska and surrounding Butler County; he was ultimately elected to the Nebraska Senate during the 1920s.

Thomas Hall and wife are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Andover, OH.
William Hall and wife are buried in Edgewood Cemetery, Ashtabula, OH.
