Stepmother of Former Governor Had Been Invalid for Some Time.
Mrs. John L. Merriam, stepmother of William R. Merriam, former governor of Minnesota, died yesterday. She was 80 years old and had been an invalid for more than a year. Mrs. Merriam had been a resident of St. Paul for 52 years. Her children. Mrs. William L. McKenna of New York and Robert H. Merriam of Chicago, were at the bedside last night. Former Governor William R. Merriam left Washington, D. C., last night in an effort to reach her before her death. He will arrive in St. Paul this morning.
Mrs. Merriam was born in Essex county, New York. She arrived in St. Paul with her husband about 1860 and a few years later Mr. Merriam founded the Merchants National bank of which he was president for many years. Her brother, A. H. Wilder, founded the Wilder Charities. Former Governor Merriam became president of the bank when her husband retired.
The funeral will take place Sunday with interment in Oakland cemetery.
