The son of John Drayton and Charlotta Bull, and the brother of well-known Revolutionary War patriot, William Henry Drayton. Charles was a gentleman planter, a doctor, Revolutionary War officer, Lt. Governor of South Carolina (1785-1787), and a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. He was also the second-generation owner of Drayton Hall plantation, his family's country estate on the Ashley River outside of Charleston, SC.
