Birdie (as she was called) was the youngest child born to Charles Frederick and Julia Mae (Grusel) Schwartz. They were the parents to six more children according to the federal census of 1900: Maude (1880), Charles (1882), Anna (1884), Edwin (1886), Walter (1893) and Harold (1896). After the death of their mother, Birdie was adopted by James and Mary McConnell. She married Burnett K. Bray on January 8, 1918 at Sigourney, Keokuk County, Iowa. They had a daughter, Bonnie Lee, born October 1918 and died in infancy on February 5, 1919. After divorcing, Birdie married Guy Hall on September 17, 1919 at Galena, Illinois. They had 2 sons Dale Ellsworth Hall (June 1920) and Donald William Hall (July 1922). Guy and Birdie operated the telephone exchanges in Van Horne, Shellsburg and Alburnett, Iowa before retiring in 1966. After Guy's death in 1973, Birdie married Marion Culver of Urbana, Iowa.
