From the Marshall Paper, Feb. 10, 1922:
Mrs. Emma Edwards, wife of J.C. Edwards, who lives two miles South of Mars Hill, on the Asheville Highway was burned to death Wednesday at 12 o'clock, Mrs. Edwards was in the family room alone.
One of the farm hands was just outside of the room, he saw an unusual amount of smoke which attracted his attention and he ran into the room, and found Mrs. Edwards nude body standing in a very stooped position with her head in the fire. She was literally burned into a crisp all over. Every hair being burned from her head and all her clothing being burned off, except a portion of her stockings, which were protected by her shoes. No one knows how she caught a fire, one theory is that perhaps she had heart failure or a stroke of apoplexy. She will be buried at the Edwards burring grounds Friday.
