The family moved to the farm in Clearriver Township in 1930. He attended school at the Lee Lewis School in America Township (1-8), Agricultural School (NWSA) in Crookston, and Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis for diesel mechanics. His favorite childhood memory was always exploring new parts of the woods around their family home. Eugene was united in marriage to Betty Ann Olufson on September 1, 1948 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Warroad. They lived and farmed together at the same place in Clearriver Township for 66 years. In 1985 Eugene and Betty received the Valley Farmers and Homemakers Award at the Red River Valley Winter Shows.

Eugene enjoyed summer and winter fishing, camping, and snowcatting, but most of all farming. Eugene served as President of the Warroad Watershed District, Roseau County F.H.A. Board, Federal Land Bank Board, Roseau County A.S.C.S. committee for 16 years and the Zion Lutheran Church Board. Eugene was the past Master of the Masonic Lodge, Past Commander of the Warroad American Legion Post #25 and color guard. He was dedicated to his country and honoring those who had served.

Eugene is survived by his wife, his 2 sons and their wives, his daughter and her husband, a brother, 2 sisters, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Everett and mother, Edith (Oliver) Battles; brothers, Wesley and Dennis; sister Betty (Violet) Thompson.
