Annie had just given birth to Ethel on February 5, 1916. The midwife that assisted in the birth had been exposed to measles and she did not inform Annie of this. During that time, Fayette County was going through a epidemic of measles, with over 200 cases reported. The town (Rainelle) the family resided in was on the border of Greenbrier County and Fayette County.


The first to pass was Forest Ayers age 2. He died February 17, 1916. Alfred Leo, age 9, was the second to succumb to death on February 21, 1916. The third child to pass was Lyndelle Clorace. She was 7 years old and died February 23. 1916. Goldie Madeline, age 11, was the fourth child to died on February 25, 1916. The fifth and final child to die was David Paul, age 3 on February 27, 1916.

The 2 remaining children, Henrietta Virginia and Ethel Mildred also contracted measles and was severely ill but survived.
