2nd child of Jacob and Margaret Martha Hefner. He had 8 brothers and sisters. He married Kesiah Cline 4 March 1855 in Catawba County, North Carolina. They had three sons: Lawrence Alexander, Jonas Alfred and James Harper Hefner. John Marcus enlisted during the Civil War in the Confederate Army, Company E, 57th Infantry Regulars, North Carolina. He became a prisoner of war at the Battle of Cold Harbor 6 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, Virginia. He was confined at Union Prison Military Service 15 June 1864 and was sent to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland. He died a month later and was buried in a mass grave with other prisoners. His name is listed on a large monument at Point Lookout under the name "Marcus Hefner".
