Phyllis Adelia Nelson was born July 31, 1916, in Dover DE to Edward and Alice Nelson and passed away at home on Friday, December 9, 2016.

She attended the Oak Grove Public School, formerly on South Little Creek Road, for six years and graduated from Dover High School in 1934, having played the violin in the orchestra. Following graduation, she worked as a secretary for James F. Allee, Jr, publisher of the State Sentinel, attorney Melvin Hopkins, and International Latex Corporation.

After marrying A. Owen Sheffer in 1939, she lived in Wilmington for ten years, returning to Dover with her husband and family in 1953. She then worked for H & R Block, was secretary for Service Realty Company and Judge Ernest V. Keith, Secretary of State George Schultz, Fairview Elementary School, and the Administrative Office of the Capital School District, retiring as a secretary for Speech and Hearing Services in the Division of Public Health.

When her children were in school, she was active in the PTA and Band Parents Booster Club of the Capital School District.

Phyllis was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Dover since 1953 where she held offices with the women’s group which included secretary and circle leader. She also assisted with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and was a part-time secretary. She sang in the Adult choir, played in the Hand Bell Choir, and was active in the Clown Ministry Group.

She also served as secretary and guide for Dover Heritage Trail, assisting with the composition and typing of the Guide Handbook, a copy of which is in the Visitor Center. She was a member of the Round Table Club of Wyoming.

Besides her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, A. Owen Sheffer; a brother, Edward Nelson; and two sisters, Florence Wilcutts and Blanche Marker.

She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; enjoyed working in her gardens and took pride in the many varieties of flowers she grew; did beautiful and challenging embroidery pieces; and spent time reading and doing word puzzles.

She is survived by son, Chester Sheffer of Dover; two daughters, Pamela Sheffer and Judith Barclay, both of Dover; son, Stanley Sheffer and wife, Connie, of Milford; son, Lawrence Sheffer and wife, Jane, of Magnolia; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Services will be held at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus Street, Dover, DE on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at 1 pm where friends may visit from 11 am – 1 pm. Burial will follow at the Presbyterian Cemetery on South Governors Avenue and North Street.
