"He was named after Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire who the fourteenth President of the United States. Pierce who
took office in 1853. . .My father, Harold Robertson, in writing about his father F. P. says 'His grandparents had much to do with his upbringing. He was prepared for college by a private tutor and entered Richmond College while quite young. He graduated in four years at the top of his class and on the way he had won the Greek Medal, the Writer’s Medal and the Debater’s Medal.' "

"In 1876 he went on to the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville for four years, and when he graduated
he could read the Bible and the classics in Greek, Latin and Hebrew. . .He was twenty-six years old. He went from
the Seminary to his first pastorate at Grafton, West Virginia. . ."

"FP married Josephine Ragland Willis of Lignum, Culpepper County. She was the daughter of Ablsolm Graves Willis and Sara Lee Gordon. The Willis and Gordons are families with roots inColonial Virginia. He was in Grafton for five years and was then called to Martinsburg where they spent six years. Their first child Sara Lee was born in Grafton on July 28,1883. Three sons were born while the family was in Martinsburg. Willis who was born May 27, 1887, Frank who was born September 21, 1888 and Edgar who’s birthday has been lost."

"In 1891 the family moved to Lynchburg, Virginia. . .My grandparents did an outstanding job of raising four very successful sons. They all attended college and became professional men. Not a farmer in the lot, a change from the past. A. Willis became a lawyer and spent a lifetime in public service in the Virginia Legislature, the US House of Representatives, and the US Senate. Frank W. was a successful business man and construction contractor who
owned and managed his own firm. My dad Harold G. was also a lawyer who spent his life in banking and for many years was the President of a major bank in Roanoke, Va. Churchill was a caring physician with a large practice in the Roanoke Valley."
