Died at her home in this city, Tuesday evening, May 26th, of heart failure, Martha Vedder, wife of Lorenzo Root, aged 73 years, 6 months and 11 days. She dropped dead at about nine o'clock and was caught by her husband before falling to the floor. Mrs. Root had attended the missionary meeting at the Baptist church in the afternoon, and was apparently in her usual health during the afternoon, and after she returned home.
Mr. and Mrs. Root were married March 3d, 1850, in Illinois, and came to Oregon by ox team two years later. They have been residents of McMinnville since 1869, with the exception of a few years which they again spent on the farm in Chehalem valley, returning here in 1879 to permanently reside. Both Mrs. Root and her husband have been devoted members of the M.E. church for more than half a century, she having been a member 67 years. Mrs. Root has been a mother to the motherless, and many has been the soul made happy by reason of her ministrations of kindness; many the burden of sorrow lifted from weary shoulders by her Christian hands. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church yesterday at 2 p.m., assisted by Rev. J. Hoberg. Interment in Masonic cemetery.
