Lydia Stigelmayer was born on September 15 1897 to Christian and Christina (Metzger) Stickelmeyer, in Kherson, Ukraine part of the Russian Empire. ( Lydia's last name spelling changed when she came to America the same time as her brother, Jacob Stigelmayer who changed his spelling to avoid the Russian Army he was AWOL from). She came to America on the ship SS Tunisian with her father Christian, leaving Liverpool, England on April 8 1909. Arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on April 16 1909. They later took a train to North Dakota and met up with the rest of the family. Lydia married Paul Wagner in Carrington, North Dakota on March 27 1916. They had 11 children, Christ, Mary, Fred, Kathryn, Walter, Ruth, John, Paul , Joseph, Dorthy, and Helen. Lydia's husband Paul died on October 7 1930 in Carrington. Leaving 8 kids , no money and lots of debt. But she managed to keep the family together. Mary the oldest daughter helped a lot. After the children had all grown up and left the house, Lydia married William Berndt on May 16 1947 in Sidney,Montana. They owned and worked a tree nursery in Edmond, North Dakota. Lydia's husband William lost his leg in a hit and run accident. After the accident Lydia had to once again step up and take charge, since William wasn't able to physically do all the chores. With the help of her children and grandchildren they kept the business going tending the trees, weeding, watering, spraying and trimming. William died on April 30 1974. Lydia went to live in California with her daughter Mary. Lydia Stigelmayer died on December 4 1982 in California. She was buried in Carrington, North Dakota.
