Mable was the daughter of Spencer Irvin and Mary (Stell) Self. She graduated from Denton High School and North Texas State University with a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Home Economics and Physical Education.

On December 22, 1934, she married Charles L. Sligh, Sr. in Denton, Texas. They both taught school in Santo, Texas and later in Elm Mott and Ross, Texas. She loved her students and teaching.

Mable was active as a Girl Scout in 1929. She helped organize what is now the Bluebonnet Girl Scout Council, led a troop, served on the Council Board of Directors, co-chaired Camp Kachina for 21 years, along with hosting summer day camp at her family farm.

She was a Bluebonnet Girl Scout Council 1994 Woman of Distinction. She was active in the Waco Council of Garden Clubs for 40 years, served as president of Bud and Blossom Garden Club for 16 years. Mable was also on the board of the Woodland Springs Nursing Home for 10 years. She was a member of the Cameron Park Zoological and Botanical Society and a member of the Lydian Sunday School class at Calvary Baptist Church.

She was a farmer and loved gardening, all animals, and birds. Mable enjoyed raising chickens and collecting them as well. Sewing and watercoloring were her hobbies.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Charles; parents; sister, Ona Self; and brother, Quinby Self.

Survivors include her son, Charles L. Sligh, Jr., of Waco; daughter, Alice Ogden and husband, Greg, of Waco; sister, Louise Self, of Abilene; grandchildren, Charles L. Sligh, III and wife, Kim, of Winston-Salem, NC and Chase Sligh and wife, Stacy, of Waco, Jordan Ogden and wife, Christy, of Dallas and Geoffrey Ogden, of Waco; four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Rogers, of Waco and Frances Livingston, of Santa Cruz, CA.
