Ed attended school through the eighth grade in rural Madison County. He farmed with his family until he was called to the services of the United States Army in September of 1942. He served in Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, France, Germany and North Africa. He was a member of the 533rd AAA Battalion. He was honorably discharged at the close of war at Fort Leavenworth, KS on October 31, 1945, never having had a furlough.

On November 18, 1945, Ed was married to Irene Jenson at the home of her parents, F.A. and Nellie Jenson of rural Platte County, NE. After marriage, they moved to their farm two miles east and two miles north of St. Edward, NE. This is also when they joined Salem Lutheran Church, rural St. Edward. Together, they farmed and raised livestock. To this union four children were born: Mary, Linda, Kenny and Lee. They continued to live on the farm until 2008 when they both moved to Cloverlodge.

Ed was preceded in death by one infant son, his parents Lee and Mabel Jenkins, his parents-in-law F.A. and Nellie Jenson, three brothers and three sisters.
