Mr Pate was born in Atlanta, Georgia September 9, 1872. His boyhood was spent in Barnwell and while quite a young man he located in Lynchburg, Virginia, later going to Washington, DC, where he held a position in the government printing office. He was living in that city when, December 30, 1902, he married Miss Mary Ann Jenkins, daughter of Mr and Mrs B M Jenkins Sr of Kline, this county. A year later he returned to South Carolina and located at Kline, where he resided until he moved to Savannah in 1920.
His body was laid to rest at Kline Tuesday afternoon by the side of an infant son who died a number of years ago. The funeral services were conducted at the home of his brother in law, Victor Lewis by Dr W M Jones of the Barnwell Baptist Church, music being furnished by the choirs from Barnwell and Kline. The many beautiful floral offerings, several of which were from Savannah, his adopted home, attested the esteem in which Mr Pate was held by all who knew him.
Besides his widow, Mr Pate is survived by the following children: Mrs William S Ray, Misses Dorothy Pate and Emily Pate, James Wilbur and Richard Manly Jenkins Pate; three sisters, Mrs Leila K Pate Best of Columbia, Mrs G M Green of Barnwell and Mrs George C Glaspy of Burlington, NC; four brothers, Claude Ashby Pate of Washington, DC, Matthew Joseph Pate of Wilson, NC, Arthur Dabney Pate of Burlington, NC, and James Gordon Pate of Asheville, NC.
