James Deane Borup was born on 14 December 1917 in Walker, Minnesota, the youngest of five children of Albert Borup (1877-1960) and Elsie Hortense Sybrant Borup (1882-1956). He was married to Joan Carol Dodd (1917-2001) on 5 July 1947 in Sisseton, South Dakota. They returned to Minnesota and had two daughters. They later relocated to Chula Vista, CA, where he worked as a school teacher. He died there on 3 October 1973 at the age of 55. According to the California, Los Angeles, Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery/Crematory Records, 1884-2002, he was buried at sea on 17 October 1973.
