Please note in this listing that he was born Albert Hiram Olthoff, and he is listed that way on his World War I Draft Registration Card, signed June 5, 1917 when he was living in Crystal Lake, Hancock County, Iowa. But when he moved back to Stephenson County, Illinois by 1921, he had changed the spelling of his surname to Althoff and it is listed that way on subsequent censuses, in the 1923, 1930, 1932, 1937, 1939, and 1945 Freeport City Directories, and on his obituary in the January 8, 1947 edition of the Freeport City Directory. Perhaps it was not a legal name change, hence the spelling carved on his tombstone.
