Dr. Samuel Marshall was born in Pennsylvania about 1809, the son of Robert and Agnes (Robinson) Marshall. Samuel was a physician. He married Elizabeth Johnston on February 14, 1833, in Fredericksburg, Ohio, and to this union were born Nancy Jane, Howard Roberson, Margaret A., Mary C. "Samantha," and Tamar Elizabeth Marshall.

Samuel and Elizabeth were still living in Ohio when daughter Nancy was born about 1834, then they lived for a time in Indiana, where their daughter Tamar Elizabeth was born about 1845. They then relocated to Bureau County, Illinois, where they were living during the 1850 US Census. In 1860 they resided in Washington Township in Washington County, Iowa.

While living in Iowa, Samuel served on the Union side of the Civil War from 1862 through 1865 as a Private in the Iowa 37th Infantry Co. B. His service record shows his residence as Muscatine, Iowa.

By 1870 the Marshalls had relocated to the city of San Diego, California. In 1880 Samuel and Elizabeth were living in Bear Valley in San Diego County, next door to the widow of their son Howard and their grandchildren, Howard and Oscar Marshall.

The Marshalls had just moved to Escondido when Elizabeth passed away in 1877, and Dr. Marshall was still living there at the home of his daughter when he died at age 90.
