Only four months after Wilmerth's death, Jasper enlisted in the Army to fight in WWII. He was a member of Company G. 355th Infantry Battalion, 89th Division.
He had a son with Ruth Doralee James (his future sister-in-law), Francis J. "Jonny" Wyatt, who died at the age of 3 from a kidney disease.
In 1969 he married Willetta Pearl (Cleek) Bennett, a widow with two grown daughters. Jasper and Willetta spent the next 32 years together until Jasper's death in 2000 at the age of 98. Willetta lived to be 102 and passed away in 2006.
