On September 23, 1920, Muriel Lucille Kingery was born to Finis O. Kingery and Pansy Viola Harlan Kingery in San Antonio, TX and lived here until her death on November 20, 2014 at 94 years of age. Her family had one of the first privately owned dairy farm in the city, Lake View Dairy. Every morning before school, she would jump on the dairy's horse drawn wagon and with her father deliver milk to customers. A passion for baseball stemmed from being a member of the all-girls softball team sponsored by Joske's of Texas. She graduated from Edgewood High School. As a single parent she went to work as a bookkeeper for a lumber yard. Her innovative thinking and dedication to detail earned her the Vice-Presidency of Scriveners, which became an empire that lasted 65 years. Her son Jim remembers when she took a bolt of cloth to work to try and persuade Ernest Scrivener to carry fabric for sale in the store. Since it began as a lumber yard, it always carried lumber as well as hardware. Gradually new departments began to appear: beautiful fabric, shoes, clothes, china, crystal, amazing Christmas decorations and a popular tea room. Many of the new departments came from the ideas that she brought to Scrivener's attention. They had a strong friendship and shared a great trust in each other. Modene Whitaker, Muriel's best friend introduced her to her brother, James, and they were married. They had one son, James Ray Whitaker before he died. She later married Kenneth Christenson who preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving son, Jim Whitaker; her brother, F.O. Kingery, Jr. (Joanne) and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff of Colonial Gardens for giving her the loving, caring treatment she received while there. Memorials may be made in Muriel's memory to the charity of your choice . A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park.
