Lavenia Ore Gattis was the daughter of James David Gattis and Sarah June Garner. She was born in Gwinnett County, Georgia. When she was seventeen years of age, the famiy moved to Jacksonville, Cherokee County, Texas. On May 13, 1900, Lavenia married James Herbert Wallace in Cherokee County, Texas. They were the parents of five children. About 1916, the family moved to Paradise, Wise County, Texas. They purchased a large home that had previously been a hotel. Lavenia raised her family while running the house as a hotel. About 1932, the family moved to Ryan, Jefferson County, Oklahoma. After the death of James Herbert Wallace in 1941, Lavenia moved back to the family home in Paradise, Texas, and again ran it as a hotel. At some point during the 1940's -1950's, Lavenia was the postmistress in Paradise. About 1965, her home was moved by the state in order to put in a highway. She moved to Bridgeport, where she spent the remainder of her life in the home of her daughter, Lois Wallace Burress.
